Digital Universities - A Boon in Higher Education

The  Government of India in its Budget 2022-2023 has announced establishment of Digital University. The University will provide access to students across the country for world-class quality universal education with personalised learning experience at their doorsteps. The digital universities are coming up by the popularity of digital education.

Digital education: It is the innovative incorporation of modern technology and digital tools to assist the progress of teaching and learning. It is also known as Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL), digital learning, or e-learning.Digital Education in India is the way forward to learning and gaining knowledge through the technology and digital devices.COVID-19 pandemic had made the teaching- learning activities to come to a grinding halt. Realising the problems of learning during pandemic the regulatory bodies  have  arrived the consensus ad idem to rely upon the digital learning also known as online education. Since the 1st lockdown in March 2020, all the states have responded to the COVID-19 situation with speed and innovation. The existing digital resources were leveraged to maintain continuity in students’ education. A comprehensive initiative  entitled PM eVidya  launched on May 17, 2020, aims to unify all efforts related to digital/online/on-air education to enable equitable multi-mode access to education. It will benefit nearly 25 crore school going children across the country. Harisal in Amravati became the first digital village on India`s map.

Advantages of Digital Education: It includes Personalised learning, gamification, self-directed learning, easier to access, students can learn at their own pace, blended learning, competency-based learning and collaborative learning, work from anywhere, and anytime, review lectures, better classroom participation, leverage digital technology,expand geographical reach, take education outside the bounds of the classroom,easily update courses  and save costs.

According to a report by the UK-India Business Council, India`s e-learning sector   grew at an annual rate of 17.4 per cent between 2013 and 2018, twice as fast as the global average. In 2021,e learning reach around 19.5%  and this is expected to grow as high as 24% by 2025. In an endevour to encash the situation, the Department of Education , Government of India has decided to establish the digital universities.

Initiative of  Government of India: The government  in its Budget 2022-2023 has announced establishment of Digital University. The University  provides access to learners  across the country for world-class quality universal education with personalised learning experience at their doorsteps. India currently has two digital universities. They are;

  1. Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIITM-K),Kochi, Kerala
  2. Rajiv Gandhi Fintech Digital Institutein Jodhpur.Rajasthan

The Government of India has allowed universities to offer fully online degrees for the first time. Over 200 Indian universities will be offering online degree courses. The University Grants Commission  issued the new criteria as per the new National Education Policy , which suggests  universities with an accreditation rating of 3.26 and above, along with A++ and A+ status by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council   can offer the online degree courses. The online university degrees are valid for both higher education and also employment and verticle mobility.

With evolution of technologies such as cloud, data centers and virtualization there is huge potential for technology, which needs  to be integrated with the education industry. Further its cost and access advantages, digital education comes as a win-win for the service providers, educational institutions and students community.
