Jamia Millia Islamia celebrates `International Day of Sign Languages

The Department of Teacher Training  and  Non-Formal Education (IASE), Faculty of Education, Jamia Millia Islamia  celebrated  International Day of Sign Languages on Friday on  23rd September 2022  at its campus. Jamia Millia Islamia is a central university  housed in New Delhi, India.  It was originally set up at Aligarh, United Provinces during the British Raj in 1920,  subsequently it moved to its current location in Okhla in 1935. It was given the deemed status by University Grants Commission in 1962

 International Day of Sign Languages is a day to raise awareness of the sign languages recognised for the human rights of deaf people. The day provides support for linguistic identity and cultural diversity for all the people who interact with each other through sign languages. This celebration started from the 2017 consequent to resolution of United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). International Day of Sign Languages is part of the `International Week of Deaf People` which is celebrated every year during the last week of September.  This week the program is being held between 19th to 25th September, 2022. International Day of Sign Languages is celebrated annually across the world on 23 September every year along with International Week of the Deaf. The choice of 23 September is the same date that the World Federation of the Deaf was established in 1951.

The theme of  2022 for the week is "Building Inclusive Communities for All".  The program started  as per the tradition of JMI, with the recitation of the Qur`an. The Department then extended a warm welcome to the Chief Guest of the event  Prof. Sara Begum (Dean of the Faculty of Education), Prof. Nahid Zahoor (HOD), all the esteemed faculty members, participants and students. The guest shared some valuable insights on the theme of the day "Sign Languages, Unite Us", and its role .
